Blog- 6-07-2015 Restoration to Ercol Nest of Tables

Ercol Nest Of Tables

Beautiful original Ercol pebble nest of tables, elm and birch wood. Funky, trendy and very versatile. A must have. This iconic piece was designed by Lucian Ercolani and manufactured in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire and is now back in fashion (keenly collected and highly regarded). Ercol furniture is synonymous with good design, quality materials and craftsmanship and is built for longevity. This is a real eye catching piece of vintage retro furniture which is currently back in production and sale however no longer made from an English Elm wood.

Restoration Process

A customer brought in the above nest of tables for restoration. She had inherited them some years ago amongst other pieces of Ercol furniture from her mother as a wedding gift, but due to downsizing decided to give most of her collection of Ercol to her daughter who was setting up her first home, (how lovely that they'll remain in the family and passed down three generations). She decided to keep the nest of tables as they would fit nicely into her new cottage.

The restoration process involved glueing and clamping loose joints, removing the old finish using proprietory paint/varnish remover. The sun faded tops had suffered water damage ring marks, and red paint marks from being used as a painting table, (from when her daughter was little)! There were also deep scratches, so we had to sand these out by hand. The customer wanted a durable finish, so a light water stain was used, followed by numerous coats of danish oil and then beeswax to bring out the beautiful grain of the elm wood tops.

Our customer was very pleased with the result, and happy that her fully restored pebble tables are a now a very desirable heirloom!
